Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) System – Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality: Harambee

TMT was appointed to design, build, operate and maintain the AFC system for the Harambee Bus Rapid Transit service in Ekurhuleni. This 12-year contract demonstrates TMT’s ability to deliver and sustain complex transport systems.

Scope

  • Validators supporting NFC, CSC, EMV and QR Code, equipped with GPS for fleet monitoring.

  • Automatic Passenger Counters (APC) to reduce fare evasion.

  • 12 BRT stations with 78 access-controlled gates.

  • Retail network integration with POS solutions.

  • Mobile kiosks for commuter access in remote locations.

  • Deployment of MobiGuider AFC software for back-office management.

  • CCTV surveillance at station kiosks.

Impact

The Harambee AFC system manages approximately R1 million in fare collections monthly across a single route, processing 72,000 validator taps with just 22 buses. TMT ensures system availability through financial reconciliation, live monitoring, preventative maintenance and comprehensive training, delivering a scalable and compliant solution for the municipality.
