Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) System – Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality: Harambee
TMT was appointed to design, build, operate and maintain the AFC system for the Harambee Bus Rapid Transit service in Ekurhuleni. This 12-year contract demonstrates TMT’s ability to deliver and sustain complex transport systems.
Scope
Validators supporting NFC, CSC, EMV and QR Code, equipped with GPS for fleet monitoring.
Automatic Passenger Counters (APC) to reduce fare evasion.
12 BRT stations with 78 access-controlled gates.
Retail network integration with POS solutions.
Mobile kiosks for commuter access in remote locations.
Deployment of MobiGuider AFC software for back-office management.
CCTV surveillance at station kiosks.
Impact
The Harambee AFC system manages approximately R1 million in fare collections monthly across a single route, processing 72,000 validator taps with just 22 buses. TMT ensures system availability through financial reconciliation, live monitoring, preventative maintenance and comprehensive training, delivering a scalable and compliant solution for the municipality.
